Driveway Repairs

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Repairing your driveway is a fairly easy project. This is one that you can do yourself, and it will not take just a whole lot of time to complete. There are several important steps that you need to take before you start your project. You will want to make sure that the area that you will be working on is clean of all residues or build up.

You will want to remove all debris from the cracks in the concrete that you are planning on repairing. A broom or brush should be enough to remove the debris. As you are preparing the crack to be filled, you will most likely need to make the crack slightly larger. Using a small chisel will allow you to cut away the needed amount. It is common to use what is called an undercut when removing the excess concrete. Undercutting is where you make the bottom of the crack larger than the top. By doing this, it allows for the filler to not be pushed out of the crack during temperature changes.

Once you have completed preparing the driveway for the repairs, you are ready to begin the process of filling in the cracks. Mix vinyl concrete filler with water as recommended. Fill the crack only a ¼ at a time so that all the layers will dry correctly. Once all layers are dried, you will use a steel trowel, a broom, and a wood float to finish and texture the surface to match the rest of the driveway. The steel trowel will give you the smoothest surface. Using a swirling motion during this step will give you the best results.

Fence Choices

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

If you are looking into fencing in your yard, then you may have noticed that there are a few different options available. You can go with the traditional wood privacy fence, chain link fence, or the newer vinyl fence. The price varies widely with the different choices. You will also want to take into consideration the style of your home. Some of the fence options may look out of place with certain home styles.

Chain Link Fence
The chain link fence is going to be the cheapest options available. It is also pretty easy to install yourself. If you are not looking for privacy, then this kind of fence is a great option. A chain link fence will last a long time if it is installed properly.

Privacy Fences
A wood privacy fence is a great option for those who want to keep their yard separate from the neighbors. Privacy fences have a very nice look to them, and they will fit with just about every home style. They are also easy to install, but can be a little heavy when lifting into place. You may want to think about recruiting some help when the installation process begins. After the fence is in place, you will want to use a wood protector so that you will keep the original color. This will help keep the appearance of wear and tear down.
The vinyl privacy fence is an option for those who do not want to have to worry about the up keep of a wood fence. The vinyl does not need to be painted or sprayed with a proctor every couple of years. Vinyl fencing is a little more expensive, but it is well worth the money that you pay. The life of the vinyl is more than that of the wood privacy fence.

Trimming Trees and Bushes

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

The outside of your home is just as important as the inside. You want to take care of the property that your home is on. Taking care of your property by trimming trees and bushes regularly can help prevent damage to your home. A bush or trees that are not properly trimmed can cause a lot of damage. An untrimmed tree may lose branches during a severe storm causing roof damage. It is common for bushes that are not trimmed to break windows during severe storms as well.
This is a good time of year to take a good look at all of the trees and bushes that may be on your property. Trees and bushes often need to be trimmed back to prevent damage to nearby structures. Bushes, especially, can look really bad if they are over grown. Trimming the trees around your property can really change the way your home looks. A home can look really run down if you have too many trees or bushes that are taking over.
A good place to start is at lowest branch of the tree. You want your trees to look tall and straight. If you have a tree that is start to look more like a bush then you should trim off the bottom branches. This will give the tree a whole new look. Also, if you have a fence line where trees like to grow then it would be best just to remove them all together. They will eventually tear up your fence. A tree should be planted at least a foot from the fence line to prevent it from growing through the fence. You do not want to have to replace your fence because this can be a costly repair.
Trimming back your bushes is a little easier. Most bushes are short and round or square in appearance. If you are not sure about the way your bushes should be then you may want to look up that particular bush. This way you will get the correct look of your bush.

Vinyl Siding

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Vinyl siding for your home is an inexpensive alternative compared to wood and stone siding. There is a choice between the lower and higher end products. Either one of these choices become less expensive than the alternative.

Things you need to consider about vinyl siding installation are the overall cost of installation, the cost of house wrapping, and Styrofoam backed vinyl siding. The higher the quality vinyl siding, the better your choice. This is true for energy costs and increased efficiency. The higher cost of the better product becomes relative to the savings in energy costs.

Vinyl siding is also maintenance free. With vinyl siding, you’ll never have to worry about chips, denting or weather damage. When the siding is manufactured, the pigment is baked in and as a result, your siding will never need repainting, which will save you money in the long run on the cost of repainting your home. Vinyl siding is extremely durable. Wood siding is not as durable as vinyl siding. Vinyl has a longer life span than both aluminum and wood siding as well. Vinyl siding comes in a variety of colors. Siding color and style can be fit to the surrounding environment and to compliment the other houses in your neighborhood. Installation of vinyl siding is not a simple job and is better left for professional contractor.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a great choice for any roof where steel or other materials are being considered. Its light weight, strength and longevity make it a desirable roofing material. It’s these qualities that make aluminum the number one metal of the aerospace industry.  Aluminum roofs are lightweight so consumers can re-roof their home which reduces the weight on their house structure. Of course the other important factor to consider is an aluminum roof’s resistance to rust and corrosion. These characteristics make aluminum roofing a preferred material in salt spray coast environments.

Termites

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Termites are insects that a homeowner never wants to see. These little insects can do a lot of damage to your home over time. It is important that you have your home inspected for termites every year. If you have you home inspected every year, you are less likely to have major damage to your home. An inspection is a lot more affordable than having to repair the damage that a colony of termites can cause over time.
Termites eat very slowly so if you find that your home maybe infested with them you don’t have to panic. You will have time to find a reputable exterminator to take care of your termite problem. Most people will have to hire out help for a termite problem because they are not familiar with the pesticides that are used for treating an infestation.
There are steps that you can take to help prevent termites from nesting in your home. One of the fist things that should be done is to remove the possibility of any standing water near the foundation of your home. Termites need water to build the nest that they create. Some of the warning signs that you may have termites are mud logs. If you are finding these mud logs along crack around the wood of your home, it would be in your best interest to schedule an inspection. The sooner you find the infestation the quicker they can be treated and the less damage you will have to your home.

Wood Floor Installation

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Three common methods used for installing wood floors

 Nailing, Gluing and Floating.

Nail Down

This is the most common installation method. In this process the floor gets nailed or stapled directly to a wood sub floor.  The flooring is installed by blind nailing the material through the tongue of the floor board into the wooden sub floor.  This allows for the nails to be hidden and are not to be visible once the the floor is installed. This installation method works for both solid and engineered wood flooring on wooden sub floors.
It’s worth mentioning that if you do not use the proper amount of nails during this process, then squeaking or cracking is likely to occur. While using more fasteners than recommended could result in splitting the tongue.

Glue Down

This method involves using an adhesive to adhere the flooring material to the sub floor, or to a moisture barrier directly on the sub floor. The adhesives work by creating a bond between the sub floor and the wood flooring.  There are three basic types of wood flooring adhesives to choose from. The first is a water based, next a solvent based and finally a moisture curing urethane adhesive. Before you begin it’s important to make sure that the sub floor material is dry and most important, level. Should you find high and low spots you will need to make them level before installations begins. It’s important to only use as much adhesive as you can effectively work with in a 15 time period.  Any longer and installation may fail. With many adhesives, the adhesive material needs flash time to be affective. This is for optimal performance.

Floating

And finally we look at the floating  method. This process is over 60 years old.  Using this installation method, the flooring material is actually floated above it. Before beginning, check the levelness of the floor and if  it’s dry. In addition use a moisture and sound barrier Underlayment. Make sure that the Underlayment used wraps up the wall to completely encapsulate the flooring. Then when the last board is put in place, trim off the excess Underlayment.

Understanding Argon and Krypton Gas

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

In the world of energy efficient windows, there exist the type of gas that is in between the glass pane.  There are two gases that is the most popular to be used for energy efficient windows.

Argon gas and Krypton gases stepped up to the plate to arm homeowners with the ammo to insulate their vinyl windows.  At the moment this is the best hi tech component that is crucial in window world.

Every big window company applies one or both of these gases. West Coast Vinyl, Pella, Anderson, Milgard, Penguin all use these gases to enhance their energy efficient windows.

Both gases are odorless, colorless, and non toxic inert gas used in between glass panes to increase insulation and energy efficiency.

Argon gas is cheaper and more readily available.  Krypton gas costs more due to better thermal performance which results in better insulation than Argon gas.  However, some manufactures may combine the two gases to balance the cost and performances.

The benefits of having either gases in the energy efficient windows is worth having in the long run.  The question is, what can you afford to have this hi tech energy efficient window installed?  Krypton gas costs more but, yields greater insulation incrementally.

The choice is yours, do what is right for your pocket and peace of mind.

INSTALLING VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

One of the best ways to add value to your older home is by replacing the windows. The staff at West Coast Vinyl tells us vinyl replacement windows are energy efficient, easy to clean, and add maintenance free to any home.

REPLACE OLDER WINDOWS

Older windows that are generally made with wooden frames can warp or rot over time. They may at one time been well sealed, but over the years the caulking flakes away and allows water to seep in. When water gets into the wood it expands and rot, leaving spaces where water and air can get into the house. Basically your house is in big trouble.

Vinyl windows take care of it all. The best part of the whole deal is that they will never rot or warp. The paint won’t peel because its vinyl!  The only maintenance they will need is cleaning – and that is so much easier than on old wooden windows with separate panes.

If you know how or are willing to learn how to replace a window, West Coast Vinyl can help you install the windows. Even if you want to do it yourself, they can help. This great do-it-yourself project is an easy construction task.

First, you will need to remove the old window. If there is still a seal from the caulking you can cut it out with a utility knife around the perimeter. Then with the help of a second person, push the window in or out with enough pressure.

Once the old window is removed, then you will need to clean up the area around the window box by scraping off the old paint and debris. A clean surface is important in getting a good fit and seal for the new window.

Next check your measurements. If old windows have become a bit lopsided, then you can square it up with shims. This extra step will make the windows fit better.

Windows then are securely attached with screws. Finally, run a seal of silicone caulking around the edges for an extra strong seal.

CARING FOR VINYL WINDOWS

To wash vinyl windows is so easy. The windows tilt in so cleaning the exterior side can be done safely from the inside. This is especially convenient for the second story windows. Any storm windows that came with the old windows are no longer needed. The new windows are double-paned and insulated.

There is no down side to installing vinyl replacement windows. They will add carefree beauty to your home for decades according to West Coast Vinyl. Hopefully, this information helps you tackle the next home improvement project.
