Choosing Kitchen Cabinets

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Kitchen cabinets are one of the main focal points of the whole room. Everything is commonly based off of what kind of cabinets you are going to have. What color of stain are you going to have? Is it going to be dark or light? How tall do you want your cabinets to be? These are all questions that are commonly asked by a contractor or builder when you are building or remodeling your home.

There are two different options that you have when you pick your kitchen cabinets. You can either have them custom made to fit your own personal style or you can buy pre-made cabinets. Pre-made cabinets can be found at any local home improvement store. One of the downsides to using pre-made cabinets is that there is usually not a whole lot of originality. Pre-made cabinets do not have very many different sizing options. You will most likely only have one or two different height choices. You may not have very many different color options as well. You may have a choice of two light colors and then one dark. It all depends on what home improvement store you purchase from.

Custom made cabinets can give the home owner exactly what they need. You can pretty well choose any size that you want even if it is not a standard size option. You are also able to create your own stain color as well. This helps give your cabinets a unique look as it can be difficult to recreate an exact match for custom stains. You will definitely want to make sure that you have enough of the custom stain or you may end up with cabinets that do not match. Custom cabinets can give the home owner the options to create a one of a kind kitchen.

Kitchen Cabinets

A kitchen is one of the most used rooms in a home. This where everyone will congregate when you have a family gathering or just a couple of friends over for dinner. The kitchen will attract just about anyone that enters your home. The beauty of the kitchen is most often determined by the cabinets. Cabinets are the main components of the kitchen. They are the first thing that most people are going to look at.

Kitchen cabinets can either make the room more appealing, or they can really bring the mood of the room below satisfaction. Some simple tips for choosing the right kind of cabinets for home is looking for how the room is set up. If the room is small you will want to go with light coloring. This will make the room seem bigger. A larger kitchen can handle the deep, dark rich colors that many people are choosing these days.

A kitchen with great looking cabinets does not mean that you have to spend a fortune. You can find great looking cabinets without having to break the budget if you are willing to shop around. Many times you can find great looking cabinets at discount remodeling stores. These stores will often take cabinets that were measured wrong and will not fit the space they were originally bought for. You can also find cabinets that have been returned because the stain was wrong. This can be a great deal for you. Just keep in mind that when you are looking for the right cabinets you do not want to settle because you can find a great deal. The whole look of the room can be determined by what cabinets you choose.

Painting Your Kitchen Cabinets

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

While kitchens aren’t exactly the centerpiece for most homes, that doesn’t mean it deserves a cold shoulder either.  A few makeovers here and a couple of small touches there should more than help give your kitchen unit a reasonable upgrade, without entailing too much in costs.

Kitchen cabinets are prime areas for getting a touch-up.  A new paint job on that small area can give the whole room a much-needed makeover.  If your kitchen cabinet is a laminate or melamine surface, however, you can’t paint over them.  If you do, there’s a good chance you’ll ruin it bad.

Make sure to remove mechanical parts like knobs, screws and hinges before starting so you don’t paint them over.  Clean all surfaces thoroughly and allow to dry.  Also, there’s no better time to putty-in any holes or sand uneven areas so you might as well do it before the actual paint job begins.

If you’re looking for a paint type to use, satin enamel works great for kitchen cabinets, ably covering up the needed areas while being completely washable, so it’s easy to clean.  When painting, it’s always best to use a 4 or 6 inch roller, so you can paint large areas with one stroke.

When painting the cabinets, it’s best to start with the face frames followed by any inside surfaces you want to paint over.  Continue with the drawers and end with the outer areas of the doors.  That should keep the whole job fairly clean and mess free.

Let the paint dry overnight and check the next morning whether you need additional coatings.  If all looks fine, put all the parts back together and marvel at the sight of your new kitchen, courtesy of a simple kitchen cabinet paint job.

Moving a Kitchen Cabinet

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Ever had the feeling that your kitchen’s appearance would be greatly improved if the top cup-boards were located somewhere else?  Why not move them? It’s not such a difficult job and the end result could be brilliant, to say nothing of a potential increase in kitchen efficiency.

Cupboards are normally fixed to the wall by screws. In the case of timber frame construction, the screws usually go into studs. With masonry construction the wall is drilled and plugged to provide solid fixing. All that has to be clone, therefore, is to undo the screws, remove the cupboard or cupboards, and refix the unit in the morefavoured position (but first carefully measure the area to make sure it will fit).
