Roofing Shingles

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Today, roof shingles are not only used to protect your home from the outside, but they can also say a lot about the style of your home. Shingles come in different sizes, shapes, colors, and materials. This combination allows for many different roofing options available to a homeowner.

Asphalt Shingles
The most common shingle used on homes is the asphalt shingles. They are the less expensive option available. They require very little maintenance and can last up to 30 years. These particular shingles come in many different color combinations. There are a few different styles that you can choose from as well. You can choose from two flaps or three flaps per sheet. There are even some shingles that can give a roof a 3-D appearance.

Wood Shingles
Wood shingles are great for homes that want a nice rustic country feel. These shingles require more maintenance that the regular asphalt shingles. They are often damaged during severe storms and need to be replaced. You also have to worry about the wood rotting or attracting insects though there are steps you can take to prevent this.

Ceramic Shingle
Ceramic shingles are commonly seen on Spanish style homes. They have a great look to them, but can be fairly expensive. They are also commonly damaged during severe storms and have to be replaced. These shingles are normally put on homes that are built in extremely hot locations. They are great for reducing the heat in your home from the sun.
